Seventeen cadets from Union County’s Piedmont and Porter Ridge High Schools' Air Force Junior ROTC program spent a week over the summer honing their leadership skills.

The cadets spent July 28 through August 2 at the Eagle Challenge Cadet Officer Leadership School at the W.E. Skelton 4H Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake Virginia, accompanied by Dr. Louis Werder, the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor in the program at Piedmont High School.

Students attending from Piedmont High School were: Tristen Baur, Samantha Brasier, Ryan Love, Maggie McBryde, Ashley Mills, Charles Simmons, Maverick Sprowles, Michael Trull and Garrett Porter. Porter Ridge students were: Christopher Bryan, George Campbell, Bozack Goodrich, Daniel Kelley, Kelbey Oakes, Laura Ordonez, Lindsey Pressley and Cheyenne Robinson.

They joined more than 200 cadets from schools across Virginia, West Virginia, North and South Carolina attended the leadership camp.

“It was an intense week-long camp consisting of physical training, drill, team sports, room inspections, uniform inspections and leadership activities,” Dr. Werder said.

Cadets started every morning with a grueling physical fitness regimen and continued throughout the day with various classes such as archery, riflery, horsemanship, high ropes, climbing wall, orienteering, canoeing and swimming. During the day cadets also participated in drill routines and sports competitions.

In order to attend, cadets had to apply and be recommended by the Piedmont High School JROTC instructors. “The leadership camp was a prerequisite for our leadership staff,” Dr. Werder said. “All these cadets will play key leadership roles in our program this coming school year.”
