JROTC Attends Summer Camp
Seventeen cadets from the Piedmont and Porter Ridge High School Air Force Junior ROTC program spent July 28 through August 2 at the Eagle Challenge Cadet Officer Leadership School at the W.E. Skelton 4H Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia. Dr. Louis Werder, the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor in the program at Piedmont High School, accompanied the cadets.
Over two hundred cadets from schools across Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina attended the leadership camp.” According to Dr. Werder, “It was an intense week-long camp consisting of physical training, drill, team sports, room inspections, uniform inspections, and leadership activities. The cadets started every morning with a grueling physical fitness regimen and they were kept busy all day. They had classes on archery, riflery, horsemanship, high ropes, climbing wall, orienteering, canoeing, swimming, as well as their drill routines and sports competitions.” The cadets had to apply and be recommended by the Piedmont High JROTC instructors to attend. “The leadership camp was a prerequisite for our leadership staff -- all these cadets will play key leadership roles in our program this coming school year.”
Attending the camp were Tristen Baur, Samantha Brasier, Christopher Bryan, George Campbell, Bozack Goodrich, Daniel Kelley, Ryan Love, Maggie McBryde, Ashley Mills, Kelbey Oakes, Laura Ordonez, Garrett Porter, Lindsey Pressley, Cheyenne Robinson, Charles Simmons, Maverick Sprowles, and Michael Trull.
