SAVE Club Sponsors Blood Drive

Johnny Rubin, junior, prepares to donate blood in the first blood drive of the school year. Beyond him is Michael Lust, sophomore, and senior Seth Brown.

The CHS SAVE Club sponsored the first blood drive of the year on September 6, 2013. The drive was the first of four blood drives to be held at CHS this year and was held by the American Red Cross. Two will be sponsored by SAVE and two will be sponsored by the National Honor Society. Many student participants were first-time donors including junior Johnny Rubin. “When I heard there was a blood drive, I wanted to do my part,” he said.

Kaitlyn Dedora, also a junior, said “I want to help save lives.” She went on to smile, “And yes, I am afraid!”

Senior Seth Brown is a veteran donor. “I have given twice with the Red Cross and once with the Carolinas Blood Center. I do it because it makes me feel good to know I helped someone else.”

“I have a rare blood type, so I like to help out,” said senior Emily L. Parker, who said it was her third donation.

Over 90 students signed up to donate with a drive goal of obtaining 80 pints but according to CHS SAVE Club sponsor Ms. Leah Ross, 86 pints were collected. “The outpouring of support and volunteering was amazing. The Cuthbertson family gives so much and I am so proud to be a part of this incredible family. It’s in our name: we like to ‘save’ lives.”
