Women's Ensemble featured at anniversary gala, perform Chinese folk music
On Friday evening, September 13, 2013 the Confucius Institute in Charlotte celebrated its 5th anniversary with a gala dinner and evening at the Ballantyne Resort. The MRHS Women's Ensemble was invited to perform a traditional Chinese folk song, Jasmine Flower.
Eleven girls participated and performed this folk song in Chinese. They also performed "Sigh No More Ladies" with text by William Shakespeare.
This was their second collaboration with the Confucius Institute, having performed in January, 2013 at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in a recital titled "From Art to Poetry to Music."
The connection with Confucius Institute at Pfeiffer University began during an evening performance in 2012 for visiting principals from our sister school in Nanjing, China, where institute leader, Professor Weihong Yan, was a guest. He later asked the girls to perform on video, which was taped on campus at Marvin Ridge and played on national Chinese television during their Mid-Autumn Celebration last year.
Before Friday evening's performance each girl was presented a gift from the Confucius Institute. The evening was very formal with ladies in beautiful evening gowns and traditional Chinese dress. On display were beautiful Chinese pottery pieces and exquisite Chinese tapestries.
