Theater Visit Is Educational!
On Monday, September 16, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students watched a play presented by the Bright Star Children’s Theatre. With the actors dressed as scientists, they talked about sugar and other chemicals that you put in your body. The students learned that one of the chemicals (high fructose corn syrup, which is a substitute for sugar) makes your body think it’s not eating anything, which in turn makes you eat and drink more soda, candy and other foods and drinks with high fructose corn syrup in it. Gaining the knowledge of what is in the food that they eat, will help them to make more healthy choices in the future in an effort to maintain a healthy lifestyle as they grow older. “I loved it, it was awesome!” exclaimed Taylor and Spencer, two students in Miss Zandrowicz’s 5th grade class.
Along with nutritional information, the students also learned about keeping our environment clean through recycling! “I loved the information about recycling,” commented Natalie, a 5th grade student. “It taught me not to litter”, said Cesar, a 5th grader who reflected on his learning from the presentation. The students were learning while they were being entertained – a great combination for a school presentation!
