Cavs Marching Band Named Grand Champ at S.C. Competition
Cuthbertson’s Mighty Marching Cavaliers have started the competition season on a high note, winning Grand Champions at The Sandhills Classic on Saturday, September 28. Competing against 13 high schools’ marching bands at McBee High School in McBee, S.C., Cuthbertson was named by judges as the top band for its performance of “Fire and Ice.” Loosely based on the Robert Frost poem of the same name, the band’s performance features the songs “Firebird” by Igor Stravinsky; “Glaciers” by Scott Director; and an original song composed by Lewis Norfleet.
“I feel that it sets a good pace going into the rest of the season and gives the students some well-deserved confidence,” said Band Director Todd Ebert.
“It’s always great to see hard work pay off, which it certainly did this weekend at The Sandhills Classic,” said Cuthbertson Principal Kim Warr. “I am so proud of our students and staff for how well they continue to represent our school. I couldn’t be more thrilled of the accomplishments they earned this weekend; all were certainly well deserved!”
Cuthbertson’s Mighty Marching Cavaliers’ recently performed at the Union County Preview on Sept. 21, at Marvin Ridge High School. The Preview offered marching bands the opportunity to perform in a non-competitive environment and get feedback from judges in order to perfect their performances for upcoming competitions.
Ten high school bands from throughout Union County participated in the recent Preview. Judges for the event included local individuals who work in the North Carolina public schools system and others who work for organizations that provide support to music teachers.
“I believe that this year was our strongest showing at preview since 2009 when the school opened,” said Mr. Ebert.
“I am proud to teach in Union County,” he continued, adding, “I feel that the band programs in this county are a strong example of the excellence in music performance that North Carolina has to offer and I am proud of all my fellow teachers and their successful programs.”
The Mighty Marching Cavaliers’ season operates concurrently with the traditional high school football season and includes performances at all home Cuthbertson Cavalier football games and select away games as well as weekend competitions throughout the Carolinas.
The marching band hopes to continue its winning streak this Saturday, October 5, at the Providence Cup completion at Providence High School. Last year the band was named Grand Champion. Go Cavs!
