It's Time for BBQ

The slaw is packed, sauce is made, pits are cleaned, and students are working hard to sell tickets. It must be time for the annual Piedmont BBQ. The big event will be held on Friday, October 18. Tickets are $8 each and can be purchased from any Piedmont student or by calling 704-753-2810. Corporate delivery is available for orders of 10 or more.

Tickets have been distributed to students and each student who sells six BBQ tickets will receive a free fourth block on Tuesday, November 26. Prize drawings have occurred for early ticket sales and the winners were Rachel Burton, Scott Stegall, Kendra Baucom, and Erin Kisiel. As principal Jonathan Tyson stated, “The BBQ helps create a sense of community between students, staff, and the community as everyone works together to raise money for our school. It is a lot of work, but is also a very enjoyable and rewarding experience.”

Involving students in the BBQ process includes making slaw, which proved to be a great Chemistry lab learning experience with Mrs. Donna Hyatt.  While mixing the slaw ingredients, students noticed their hands were getting cold due to the "hetergeneous mixture" that was occurring and Hyatt explained to the students that the slaw was contracting because it was losing heat energy.  The demonstration of endothermic reactions and the integration of Chemistry concepts into the slaw making process made several students laugh but, as Hyatt stated, "This activity just goes to show that Chemistry does occur everywhere and especially in the kitchen."

Proceeds from the Piedmont BBQ fundraiser are used to provide additional technology and instructional materials for the school. For example, last year’s BBQ helped purchase furniture for classrooms, helped purchase and mount the large Panther statue that is now in the main lobby, and funded various school beautification endeavors over the summer.

Anyone interested in corporate delivery should complete the delivery form that is available by clicking here. As part of the BBQ experience, students have had the opportunity to purchase BBQ T-shirts and submit a video for the BBQ commercial contest. Students will use their Chromebooks on Wednesday, October 16 to vote electronically for their favorite commercial. Questions related to the BBQ should be directed to Dawn Stegall at 704-753-2810.
