Tabatha Arce named East Union Middle's Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Tabatha Arce, 6th grade Social Studies teacher, was recently chosen as East Union’s Teacher of the Year.

Mrs. Arce moved to NC four years ago with her husband, Eddie, and their son Edison. She has had the opportunity to both live and teach in several different places. Mrs. Arce grew up in Queens, NY. She received her BA in English and Theology from St. John’s University. She then attended New York University, where she received her MA in Educational Theatre.
During Mrs. Arce’s time at NYU she took a class that introduced her to the special education population. She was drawn to this population of students and felt like her abilities as a teacher would be best served helping those with special needs.

While attending NYU, Mrs. Arce decided to take on another challenge and apply to become a NYC Teaching Fellow, an alternative teaching certification program where you begin to teach immediately and work on receiving your master’s degree at the same time. Once accepted to the program she began teaching a special education class at the elementary level in the NYC public school system. In 2005, she graduated NYU but continued her work as a teaching fellow. In 2007, after 3 years of teaching and going to school, Mrs. Arce received her MSED from Queens College, City University of New York in elementary education and special education.

Mrs. Arce says, “Teaching is my passion and I hope to do it for many years to come. I am teaching 6thgrade social studies in an amazing school. East Union Middle School has become more than just a place I work; it’s become a place where I have both friends and family. This is my 10th year of teaching and I love it more and more each day. I have taught in many different environments, including a self-contained special education class in NY to a 7th and 8th grade classroom in Oceanside, CA. I think these experiences have really taught me how to be diverse in my teachings.”

According to Mike Murray, 6th grade assistant principal, “Mrs. Arce is a great teacher- leader who is an asset to East Union. Whether it is coordinating class trips, creating interesting and interactive lessons or sharing technology tips with her colleagues Mrs. Arce is always willing to do what is best for kids.”

East Union is very proud to have Mrs. Arce represent us as Teacher of the Year!
