Sun Valley Elementary has chosen AIG teacher Sally Petoskey as their new Teacher of the Year during 2013-14. She has been an educator of 36 ½ years. Petoskey has worked in: MI, VA, and NC. She has lived in IN, GA, MA, SC, MI, VA, and NC. She has been at Sun Valley Elementary since the school opened in 2008.

Her claim to fame are her children and spending a year in England as an exchange student. Her favorite subject to teach is reading, which is closely followed by science and social studies. Math is not far behind since teaching with the Singapore math program. She likes them all because she likes to learn, and she wants her students to feel the same way.

Having a fabulous family history, Petoskey likes to instill in her students the following quote which says, "Remember who you are and where you come from."

Maria Simpson is the 2013-14 school year SVES Teacher Assistant of the Year. She is no stranger to UCPS. Like Petoskey, she has been at Sun Valley Elementary since the school opened in 2008 with a total of six years of service. Even though she has been at Sun Valley Elementary, North Carolina is not the only state she has lived in. Mrs. Simpson has lived in DE, NY, and NC.

When asked about her new honor as being Sun Valley Elementary’s new Teacher Assistant of the Year she said, “I just come to work every day and do my best and try to give 110% to our students.”

Principal Dr. Terri Cooper said a majority of her faculty are highly qualified. “I was glad to see that our faculty got to choose who they thought would best represent our school with the rest of the district. Giving faculty members this opportunity is what makes our school great,” Cooper said.
