Johnson & Wales University chef visits Weddington High class

Weddington High School students enrolled in Foods I & II had an surprise guest recently.

Chef Thomas DeRosa of Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte came by the classroom on Oct. 9, 2013, to talk about his school and do a cooking demonstration.

He began his presentation by talking with the students about the history of Johnson & Wales University and the academic programs and degrees offered at each of the four JWU campuses.

"Students were given an inside glance at the opportunities and programs that the university has to offer current and potential students," said Latasha Frink, Weddington High's Foods I & II teacher.

Chef DeRosa also spoke about the different majors at each of the four campuses, which are located in Charlotte; Denver, CO; Providence, RI; and Miami, FL.

“Perhaps the most memorable of his 90-minute presentation was the cooking demonstration of Mushroom Risotto which all the students took a special interest in,” Frink said.

“It was great!” said Weddington sophomore Nick Patterson. “I loved it.”

“It was an opportunity to taste something different,” added senior Hayley Chilcott. “It was great! I think I will try to cook it at home."

Frink said the students were very grateful that Chef DeRosa had visited their class at Weddington High School.
