Panther Seniors Honor Influential Teachers

Pictured are senior football players and their selected staff member who has been influential during their high school career at Piedmont.

Varsity football players honored their most influential teacher on November 1st by presenting them with their jersey to wear for the day. Whether it was their influence in the classroom, in the athletic realm, or as a parent, it was a special day for both the athlete and their honoree. According to Coach Ron Massey, “Having seniors select someone from their high school career at Piedmont who has had an influence on their lives is a great honor for the staff.”

The following teachers were honored by senior Panther football players: Dr. Steven Kelly – Colton Greene; Rhonda Hill – Jacob Collura; Jennifer Brooks – Jaden Funderburk; Milt Flow – Tyler Blaylock; Steve Campbell – Devin Thomas; Allison Sanderson – Tyler Callahan; Josh Montenaro – Tyler Long; Brittany Stowell – Matt Fisher; Jennifer Guignard – Cameron Price; Mandy Smith – Lucas Smith; Phil Apple - Colby Price; Tim Blair – Cale Helms; Kris Rookard – Mr. Wells; Annette Harris – Carlos Sandoval; Dawn Stegall – Vassar Strickland; and Stacy Vickers – Ethan Pierson.

The honor is indeed significant to teachers as several reflected on their students who selected them. According to English teacher Rhonda Hill, "I was so honored that Jacob asked me to wear his jersey. I appreciate his daily smile and winning attitude. To know that I have had a positive impact on a student's life is humbling."  Math teacher Jennifer Guignard further replied, "What a delightful surprise and honor to be selected by Cameron Price as a teacher who has had an impact on his life. The best part of the day is having other students I teach ask about the jersey and hear them reflect on the senior football players too. What a great way to recognize our senior athletes at PHS." Finally, English teacher Brittany Stowell stated, "I was honored to be selected to represent Matt Fisher for Senior Day. It was a pleasure teaching him.  He is one of the most sincere, down-to-earth individuals I have ever met. His enthusiasm and kind spirit always makes everyone’s day!”

Teachers influence so many students, and they often never know the impact of their efforts both in and out of the classroom. Carlos Sandoval has been greatly influenced by Student Government advisor Annette Harris. According to Sandoval, “She influenced me to do the right things and to try to please as many people as possible, even when you know you can’t please everyone.” Sandoval plans to attend a 4-year college after graduation and study business management. Another senior, Devin Thomas, selected assistant principal Steve Campbell as his most influential staff member. “I selected Mr. Campbell because he has helped me throughout all four years of high school. He truly “had my back” and I am thankful to him for this.” Thomas has played football all four years of high school and plans to attend a 4-year college to study chemical engineering.

The 2013 Panther football team has had a very successful season under Coach Ron Massey. According to Massey, “This has been a special group of seniors. They are a close knit group who support each other and who have done the school and the community proud with their efforts this season.” The team was picked to finish last in the Southern Carolina 3A Conference, however, they have exceeded expectations this season. As Massey stated, “Hopefully, we can finish strong and be rewarded with a home playoff game.” On behalf of the entire coaching staff, Coach Massey would like to thank the staff and students for their tremendous support this year. This support has been a major influence on their success.

The senior Panthers will play their final home game vs. Weddington on November 1st, where they will be honored during the game. To support the Panthers as they enter the first round of the play-offs, Student Government will sponsor a bonfire on Thursday, November 14 at 6:30 by the tennis courts. Come out and show your Panther spirit!
