Voyagers Raise Awareness Through Shoe Campaign
During the month of October, the Voyagers Club worked to increase awareness of poverty throughout the world in its second annual campaign to combat this sorrowful condition. On Thursday, October 10, members of the Porter Ridge community chose to “Go Barefoot for Them.” This event kicked off a month long drive to collect shoes for the Soles for Souls Campaign. During this campaign, 147 pairs of shoes were collected for distribution.
On “Go Barefoot” day, students and teachers alike could pledge to help raise awareness of global poverty by going barefoot in a show of solidarity and compassion for the millions who live without their basic needs being met. In school, shoes were worn in the halls, but in classes (if teachers chose to participate) shoes could be removed and socks only could be worn. Prior to October 10, participants could register at the Soles 4 Souls website to represent a specific person.
Following “Go Barefoot” Day, Porter Ridge’s International Club, the Voyagers, collected shoes throughout the month of October. Through the generous donations of staff and students, the Voyagers collected 147 pairs of shoes to send to the Soles 4 Souls program. The shoes will be redistributed through the organization’s international micro-enterprise partners. As a result, men and women will be given the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty by earning a sustainable income.
