Parlez-vous francais? Piedmont Students Engage in Global Exchange Through ePALS

Parlez-vous francais? Do you speak French? That's an interesting question that may soon be answered with "Oui" (Yes) by students in Ms. Gallagher's 7th and 8th grade yearlong classes. This year they have the unique opportunity to exchange emails and letters with students in France using ePALS (a global online community for students and schools). The students from France attend a school called Collège Fontbruant. The school is located in southwest France in a small town called Saint-Porchaire - not far from the Atlantic Ocean. They will eventually be working on projects that they will share with each other about each of our countries, what our daily life is like, etc.

The students in France started off the exchange by writing introductory emails describing themselves to the 7th and 8th graders here at Piedmont Middle. It was an exciting day when they were able to read about their French counterparts for the first time! Our 7th and 8th graders have been composing and sending their responses and descriptions of themselves back to the students in France. In their emails, students are corresponding in English with each other (this is also helping their ePALS in France work on their English!) but many of the 7th and 8th graders hope to learn a few words in French over the course of the year. Students will be writing emails and interacting with their ePALS at least twice a month.

Students have been very excited about this opportunity and are always asking, "Did you get any emails?" "Do I have an email yet?" "Is it time to write another email yet?" It's good to know our students here in Monroe, North Carolina are curious about the world and want to learn more about other people and places. Through this exchange Ms. Gallagher and the teacher in France, Ms. Marie-Francoise Richaudeau, hope that this exchange throughout the year is enjoyable for all and that students on both continents come away from it more aware of the world around them. There is much that can be gained and learned through interactions with people from other places.

For more information on ePALS, visit their website at http://www.epals.com. There are a couple other classes here at Piedmont Middle School that are also using this website to promote global awareness and understanding.
