16th century trial takes place at East Union
7th Grade students at East Union Middle School brought a trial back from the early 16th century known as the Diet of Worms. This was a case in which Emperor Charles V and Pope Leo X summoned Martin Luther and asked him to recant, or take back, his 95 Theses.
Students brought this important case back to life in a Mock Trial in the 21st century. Students were assigned roles and required to research and build a case as a team to allow their team to prove Martin Luther’s innocence or guilt. In the 21st century, Martin Luther was provided lawyers and Pope Leo X was aided by prosecuting attorneys. Students collaborated in class, built a case, presented their case, and used the research they acquired to answer key questions from both attorneys, as well as the Judge (Mr. Yarbrough).
Upon completion of the trial, Mr. Yarbrough read the verdict to each class, but finished it with what really happened in the 16th century Diet of Worms.
