Eight members of Cuthbertson’s FFA chapter traveled to Louisville, Kentucky for the 86th Annual FFA National Convention and Expo. The students left bright and early on October 27, 2013, and stayed through November 2. They spent three days at Louisville’s Convention Center participating in the Careers show, Expo, and FFA shopping mall. The students were present for two of the nine sessions, and while there, FFA National Officers Brennan Costello and Kalie Hall gave their retiring speeches. The CHS FFA experienced a week of leadership and career building activities with other FFA chapters around the country.

Cuthbertson’s FFA officers Emily Koester, Haley Pileski, Mckenzie Harton, Megan Hunt, Victoria Haidar, all seniors, juniors Maddie Cox and Rachel Schauer, sophomore Wyatt Knight, and CHS FFA advisor and Agriculture teacher Ben Shumate represented not only Waxhaw but North Carolina. Along with the CHS FFA’s Chapter, several other Union County schools were present, including Piedmont, Forest Hills, Weddington, Monroe, Sun Valley, and Parkwood.

The FFA’s 2013-2014 Sentinel, Haley Pileski, said, “This was my second time attending FFA’s National Convention, it’s always a great opportunity to grow and ignite our local FFA chapter while also gaining leadership skills that help me not only in the FFA, but also my future endeavors.”

In addition to the event being held at the Louisville Convention Center, part of it also took place at the Kentucky state fairgrounds. The organization chose to attend this event to experience how the national FFA operates, seek possible colleges with exceptional agricultural programs, explore the expo center and careers show, and sit in on several workshops that teach possible futures that FFA has to offer for its members.
