Luke Edwards, 8th grader, performs in Union County Youth Ballet's "Nutcracker"
Physical conditioning, stamina and guts are required for young men to become dancers. Conditioning? Each 90-minute class includes roughly a hundred pushups, and workouts for virtually every muscle in the body.
Stamina? Try jumping up and down as high as you possibly can, switching the direction of your feet on each leap, a hundred and twenty-eight times in a row. Guts? One word: spandex. Luke Edwards has been studying ballet since he was five. Because his older sisters danced several days each week, Luke grew up in the dance studio by default.
His first "Nutcracker" with Union County Youth Ballet was in 2005. This year, he completes his second season as "Rat King", and dances an additional role as Russian Attendant. Performances are at Wingate University on December 13 and 14th.
