CATA's Poetry Out Loud Winners
Kelly Manning, a senior from Ms. Cable’s Honors English IV class, took the top honors at CATA’s annual Poetry Out Loud Competition on November 25, 2013 during 4th block. Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest that awards a national winner a prize valued at $50,000.
Ms. Manning placed first in the school-wide competition, which included 15 competitors from all English classes at CATA.
The competition places an emphasis on memorizing and reciting chosen poems from the official anthology while paying attention to details such as accuracy, physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, and evidence of understanding of the poem.
In second place was Roni Rose, of Dr. Tarlton’s AP English III class, and tied for third place was Siah Reed of Ms. Cable’s Honors English IV class and Alisha Hartley of Ms. Henry’s Honors English IV class.
All four finalists will compete at the Union County Poetry Out Loud Competition, to be held in January.
This will be Roni Rose’s second trip to the county finals, as she won the competition last year and moved forward to the state level, where she placed sixth.
We wish these talented students luck as they prepare for the next level of competition.
