FFA Ranks in State Veterinary Event

CHS FFA Adviser Ben Shumate; Rachel Schauer, 11th; Kelsey Martin, 10th; Haley Pileski, 12th; and Wyatt Knight, 10th; competed in the NC FFA Vet Science Career Development Event in November.

The CHS FFA Chapter participated in the state FFA Vet Science Career Development Event November 16, 2013, at West Johnston High School in Benson, NC. Team members included Kelsey Martin, Wyatt Knight, Rachel Schauer, and Haley Pileski. The CHS FFA Adviser is Ben Shumate. The chapter finished 3rd in the southwest region and 24th overall in the state.

The students had to perform various clinical and restraint skills that an actual veterinarian might perform in the field. Students also had to know how to identify animal breeds and miscellaneous equipment used by veterinarians. Finally, the students took a written exam on the various animal body systems and patient management and then took a math practicum applying their clinical knowledge in several scenarios.

Students worked hard preparing for this event after school and had an opportunity for an actual vet visit at Carolina Pets in Wesley Chapel, NC. Here students had an opportunity to work with an actual vet and simulate the skills they needed to know for the competition

Mr. Shumate said, “I was very proud of our students. We placed 24th in the state and third in our region. For our first time ever competing I thought we did really well!”
