"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams.”
― Roald Dahl, in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Fourth graders at Antioch Elementary recently read Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The novel was the basis for the “Close Study of Character” unit in English Language Arts during the second grading period.

Students enjoyed reading the text and doing interdisciplinary activities that correlated with the unit.

The fourth grade also watched the 1971 version of the movie and went to Matthews Playhouse on a field trip to see the play, both of which were based on the novel. After reading and viewing different versions of the story, they compared all the versions in a diagram.

As a final culmination of the unit, the fourth grade teachers dressed up as the book characters for Book Character Dress-up Day.
