Live! From the East Union Art Room

An art students has an online conversation with Google doodler, Mike Dutton.

On Monday December 9th, Mrs. Walters' 7th grade art students and Mr. Blackledge teamed up with Google Cultural Institute to Participate in "Connected Classrooms: Dots to Pixels, an Art Lesson With Google Doodler Mike Dutton."

During this Google Hangout session, EUMS students were able to interact live via web cams with Mr. Dutton in California, as well as another art classroom in Alberta, Canada. Close to 300 other art classes were able to watch this session live. Mr. Dutton shared some of his own artwork, and answered several questions from students about being a professional artist.

The class focus was the famous Pointillist painting " Sunday On La Grande Jatte, 1884" by the artist Georges Seurat. Mr. Dutton explained the process of pointillism, or the art of painting using dots. The students were able to see a super close- up of the painting and the incredible detail and colors that the artist painted.

The Students were then asked to give Mr. Dutton a subject to paint in the pointillist style, while they used markers to create their own masterpiece in pointillism. At the conclusion of the hangout session, students shared their artwork with with the other connected classroom and with Mr. Dutton.

Mrs. Walters was really excited by the results. " It was an amazing opportunity to use technology in the art room to learn live from a professional artist on the other side of the country. The students were enthralled by the whole process."
