FVES 2013 Spelling Bee

On Tuesday, November 19, 2013, Fairview’s top spellers from grades 3, 4 and 5 competed in this year’s school Spelling Bee. The Spelling Bee was held in the school gym at 8:30 Tuesday morning and was attended by family and friends of the participants, as well as the student body in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.

The 3rd grade participants included Layton D. and Sydney P. from Mrs. Elizondo’s class, Valerie P. and Alaina S. from Mrs. Podpora’s class, Samuel B. and Dane M. from Mrs. Taylor’s class, and Alison A. and Braden C. from Mrs. Whitley’s class. Representing the 4th grade classes were Chloe L. and Harrison L.s from Mrs. Brucia’s class, Meredith B. and Christian W. from Mrs. Helms’ class, Bella C. and Allison C. from Mrs. Jenkins’ class, and Ben D. and Aiden P. from Mrs. Wilson’s class. From the 5th grade, we had Asia I. and Callie L. from Mrs. Cameron’s class, Kendall B. and Bri C. from Mrs. Dawson’s class, Anthony K. and Valarie P. from Ms. Duncan’s class, and Tucker B. and Kylee T. from Mrs. Shelley’s class.

Serving as judges for the event were Representative Dean Arp, Union county’s delegate to the North Carolina House of Representatives; Dr. Tom Bulla, Director of Elementary Education for Union County Public Schools; and Mrs. Alison Mathews, Fairview’s Media Coordinator. The pronouncer for the Spelling Bee was Mrs. Lisa Phillips, Library and Media Services Coordinator for Union County Public Schools.

After 12 rounds of words, 4th grader Ben D. was crowned school champion by correctly spelling the word “expunge”. Ben will move on to represent Fairview by participating in the Union County Spelling Bee to be held at Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA) on January 15, 2014. Making Ben work for the win by being named as runner-up was Asia I, a 5th grade student.

Fairview is so very proud of these winners and of the 22 other participants who were brave and fearless enough to stand up in front of their peers, family members, and community members and give their best efforts!
