2nd Graders Learn about Global Supply and Demand
After completing an economics unit of study including the concepts of wants and needs and supply and demand, Shiloh’s second graders used their understanding of goods and services to expand to the buying of ingredients on a global scale. Using the story How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, each class traced the supply of ingredients when the community market is closed. After tracking the route on a world map, the main character’s travels to distant lands to find the best ingredients was compared to the convenience of the grocery stores in the Shiloh community. While many of the ingredients can be found easily here, the students realized the reason for the expense of cinnamon sticks – only a limited quantity is available in the rainforests of Sri Lanka. This was an unexpected lesson in supply and demand. By adding a global component, a simple economic lesson takes on a whole new meaning.
