UCPS Central Services feeds dinner at homeless shelter

The Union County Public Schools Central Services staff took some quality time during the holiday season to spread some holiday cheer by spending an evening feeding the homeless at the Union County Homeless Shelter.

School system employees donated enough food to feed about 50 individuals a meal of lasagna, salad and bread, with cake for dessert.

“We made eights large pans of lasagna, enough to feed those at the shelter plus hopefully be able to offer seconds,” said UCPS Safety and Security Secretary Pat Wicker. “What a great way to give back to the community.”

Central Services employees either donated food or prepared the meals, and then a handful actually served the food at the homeless shelter.

Those who served meals were UCPS School Security Coordinator Don Novak, UCPS Safety and Security Secretary Pat Wicker, Executive Secretary Kaye Rowland, Human Resources Support Specialist Lorayn DeLuca, Safety and Security Director Jarrod McCraw, Administrative Assistant Cathy NeSmith, and Director of Federal Programs Bill Cook.

“We also wanted to do it because they’re our neighbors,” Wicker said, referring to the shelter being located next to Central Services building.

There also exists a desire to give back to the shelter after they donated drinks to a recent golf tournament fundraiser sponsored by the Union County Education Foundation.

“We really enjoyed doing it and were happy to have the opportunity to help,” Wicker said. “We hope to do it again at least once more in the upcoming year.”
