UCPS to host Google Superintendent & Curriculum Symposium
Union County Public Schools has been selected by Google representatives to host the esteemed Google Superintendent & Curriculum Leadership Symposium for its region.
The purpose of the symposium is to provide a platform in which attendees are able to learn best practices of educational technology integration and also discuss the successes of implementing a 1:1 laptop initiative.
UCPS is approaching its fourth year implementing a 1:1 initiative. It began implementation in grades 6-8 and have expanded its initiative to all secondary students, grades 6-12, with the deployment of more than 22,500 Chromebooks.
To support this initiative, teachers receive ongoing professional development by UCPS Instructional Technology Facilitators. Some of these trainings include the use of various software programs, Web 2.0 tools and Google Apps for Education.
In addition to what is occurring within the district, ideas fostered from within the county are being shared outside UCPS. One of these is UCPS Superintendent Dr. Mary Ellis’s vision of a "My Size Fits Me" approach to learning.
Dr. Ellis, UCPS Deputy Superintendent of Instructional Technology & Operations Dr. Mike Webb and UCPS Chief Technology Officer Tony Burrus were invited to present to the NC State Board of Education to share about the UCPS journey towards excellence.
Dr. Ellis will invite approximately 70 participants to partake in the Google Superintendent & Curriculum Leadership Symposium in Feburary of 2014 located in Union County.
The morning will begin with a keynote speaker and then participants will visit classrooms and attend various breakout sessions cover such topics as Leadership, Infrastructure, Professional Development, Deployment Management, a session by Google and a discussion panel of students and principals.
"This is an exciting honor bestowed on UCPS by Google and will be a memorable event," said Becky Swiger, Instructional Technology Facilitator.
