UCEC hosts annual Angel Tree Event for Pre-K students
Union County Early College Leadership Class students have been hard at work for the past month, decorating gift bags, painting scenery for puppet shows, creating decorations, and purchasing gifts.
All of this hard work, planning and preparation was for the school’s annual Angel Tree Event for Pre-Kindergarten students, held this year on Dec. 5, 2013, at the South Piedmont Community College Conference Center.
With the help of Janet Turner, UCPS Title 1 Coordinator, UCEC was able to sponsor 155 students from Sardis, Walter Bickett, Benton Heights, Union, East, Rocky River, Rock Rest, Marshville, and Wingate Elementary Schools.
The students received a special gift that they had requested, along with an additional Christmas toy, coloring book, crayons, hat and mittens.
The children were treated to a puppet show, a skit, holiday songs, a visit from Santa, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, and several elves.
“The entire event was a great success, and everyone had a wonderful time,” said event coordinator Karen Pharr.
“This is such a wonderful, gift-giving experience for our students,” said Pharr, the Leadership Class teacher. “I overhead several people mention that they were truly in the ‘Christmas spirit’ after attending the event. It was so rewarding to see both the Pre-K and the high school students engaged with each other. Everyone left the event in high spirits!”
UCEC students have sponsored pre-kindergartenstudents at this annual event since 2006, the first year of UCEC.
The Angel Tree Event is a highlight for UCEC each year, and we believe that an important part of being a good citizen is giving back to our community.
