Parkwood Middle School CTE Students Build CO2 Dragsters

The 8th grade students of Ms. Sanders’ STEM class participated in the building of CO2 dragster vehicles. Students executed the design process by implementing the 6 steps of the Problem Solving method. Beginning the design process with a single 12 X 3 inch piece of balsa wood, students were paired up to compete in a final drag race in the halls of Parkwood Middle School.

The objective was to determine how rules impact an outcome or a solution. Students identified and properly used measurement systems and techniques by testing and evaluating.

In order to complete the design process Ms. Sanders’ students collaborated with Parkwood High Schools Mitchell Bryant and his Agriculture students to cut, shape and drill their custom dragster vehicles!

Partnering with PWHS Career & Technical Education students has given students the opportunity to explore many pathways available within UCPS that will train them to be Job & Career Ready. In addition to partnering with PWHS agricultural department, students were invited to tour 8 different career related high school classes (Foods, Multi-Media & Webpage Design, Core & Sustainable Constructions, Drafting, Horticulture) in an effort to raise awareness of course offerings, certifications and Co-Op’s offered by UCPS.
