3rd Grade Develops Playground
Third graders in Mrs. Kerstetter's class were busy inventing an new playground. As part of their Physical Science unit the third graders tackled the idea of creating a new playground for Sandy Ridge.
Mrs. Kerstetter posed a problem the PTA was considering purchasing new structures for outside. Since the third graders were learning about gravity, forces, speed and inertia, they were able to take their new learned skills, vocabulary and understanding to develop items such as a slide, zip-line and swings to explain their understanding of gravity, forces, motion, speed acceleration. In addition, a representative from a local playground construction company presented additional ideas to the third graders about how to create playgrounds and what are some requirements that need to be met.
Overall, the third graders learned new science vocabulary that is relevant in the real world and how to work as a team to design, develop and present and persuade and idea.
