Coaches Go Barefoot for Bare Feet
It may have been one of the coldest evenings of the year, but no one would have known it watching coaches from Cuthbertson and Weddington High Schools running up and down the courts in bare feet at the January 7 basketball game. They went “barefoot for bare feet” to help raise awareness and donations for Samaritan’s Feet. The organization provides shoes for children around the world who may never have had a pair. According to www.samaritansfeet.org, Samaritan’s Feet partners with many organizations including the Barefoot Coaching Council to help reach the goal of providing 10 million pairs of shoes for children in the next 10 years, and since 2003 Samaritan’s Feet and its team of ambassadors have blessed more than four million children in more than 60 nations.
It was the fourth year in a row the schools and coaches have participated in this event sponsored by the FCA. At the game paper footprints were sold to benefit the charity. The footprint trail covered the gym hallway and helped promote the cause. Money was raised from the footprint sale and online donations. Donations may still be made online through January 24, 2013.
“It went really well. We had some alumni and current FCA members step up and help out. They sold the paper feet, helped at halftime, and walked through the stands with shoeboxes,” said Catie Helms, CHS teacher and FCA adviser.
The event was covered by Fox News and the clip may be seen at www.myfoxcarolinas.com “Coaches Go Barefoot for Charity.”
