4th Graders Learn Nutrition
The Fourth Grade students have just wrapped up our Food and Nutrition Unit where we learned about the 5 food groups, the purpose of each group, and how the nutrients help our bodies grow strong and take care of us. Throughout this unit we preformed many tasks but our favorite had to be the Fat Test. For this experiment we gathered common food items such as Ranch dressing, mustard, syrup, mayo, butter, popcorn, peanut butter, etc. The students used a special paper to test each food item, we controlled the experiment by spreading the food item evenly inside of premeasured circled, this ensured that we were all testing the same amount of food the same way. We let the food items sit overnight and observed them to determine if they had no fat, little fat, or a lot of fat. The students were able to tell the fat content of items based on the coloring of the paper and the spread of fat inside or outside of the circle. This pushed the students to think about their daily food intake and the items that they thought were healthy, this was an eye opening experience for all of us.
