Sun Valley Elementary School Students Learn About Government

Katelynn, Kiersten, Sandra, Patrick Wilson, and Mayor Patrick Cannon

Sun Valley Elementary parent Sandra Wilson and her family recently had the opportunity to visit some of Charlotte’s high level government officials. While picking up her husband from downtown Charlotte at the end of January, Mrs. Wilson brought her two Sun Valley Elementary girls along in hopes that they might get a brief social studies lesson on how government works.

Wilson was excited to quickly learn that many government officials were able to take time out of their busy day to meet with her and her family.

Katelynn Wilson, a third grade student in Ashley Down’s class, said, “I had the opportunity on January 28, 2014 to go to the Government Center. I met the city manager, the sheriff, and the mayor of Charlotte. I saw his office and sat in his big chair. In his office there were 3 flags: the city of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Mecklenburg County. I had a fun day.”

Kiersten Wilson, a kindergarten student in Julia Starnes’s class, said, “I got to sit in his chair. It was big. There were different kinds of flags. There were three flags. I liked the Mayor’s Office because it had a chair, and it had a TV.”
