8th grade Social Studies students learn about the Civil War
For the past several weeks, 8th grade students have been studying the Civil War and North Carolina's involvement in the war. Eighth grade teachers invited a special guest, Civil War re-enactor, Colonel Geary Shafer, of the 13th North Carolina regiment to come speak to the students.
Students were able to see Colonel Shafer's Confederate officer's uniform and view his side arms and infantry musket rifle. They learned about the different types of battle flags that were used by the Confederacy and the state of North Carolina during the war. Students learned how General Robert E. Lee gave North Carolina soldiers their nickname and about the role women played during the Civil War. They learned about the different tpes of battle flags that were used by the Confederacy and the state of NC during the war. They also heard about what life was like for the average Union and Confederate soldier, in a field hospital, and on the home front during the war. Colonel Shafer brought Civil War items for students to view and touch.
