CHS Hosts Red Cross Blood Drive
The CHS National Honor Society sponsored its second blood drive of the year, held by the American Red Cross, on February 7, 2014. The NHS is sponsored by CHS Science teachers Marissa Cominotti and Jennifer Wells-Lewis. There were almost 30 first-time donors, including junior Nick Laramee, who said “I wanted to donate blood because I wanted to help save the lives of others.”
Alex Abuaita, senior and a member of NHS, volunteered at the blood drive. “Helping at the blood drive is always an amazing experience because everyone is so nice and it’s such a great cause!”
There were also many repeat donors present at the blood drive. Third time donor Sia Kennedy said, “I like knowing that by giving less than an hour of my time, I can save someone’s life.”
A total of 105 students signed up to give blood, and 77 were pints needed to be collected in order for CHS to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the American Red Cross. 90 pints were obtained by the end of the day, and the scholarship will be split between two students from the CHS National Honor Society and SAVE clubs.
NHS secretary Jennifer Barber said, “I am so happy that NHS was able to organize this event that helps so many people in the community, and our last two blood drives have been extremely successful.”
