Parkwood junior represents school at state wrestling tournament
Dallas Starnes competed at the NCHSAA 2A State Wrestling Tournament Thursday February 20th-Saturday February 22nd. He qualified for the 220 lb weight class by finishing second in the 2A Midwest regional to an opponent from North Surry 2-1. Starnes won his first match Thursday night when he pinned an opponent from Ayden-Grifton in a cradle during the 2nd period. On Friday morning, Starnes would lose to the #1 ranked opponent out of Hendersonville. He would rally back to win his second match of the day 4-2. On Saturday's medal round, Starnes would drop a heart breaker 7-5 to finish one win shy of winning a medal.
"It's nice to have someone qualify for the state tournament, but we were too close to being on the podium to be completely satisfied," Wrestling Coach Eric Rees stated.
Starnes was able to pick up career win #100 by winning the regional semifinals, a match that took place at 1:20 a.m. the Sunday before the state tournament. "Winning match #100 was awesome especially because it meant I qualified for states," said Starnes.
Starnes finished the season with a 39-14 record, and a career record of 102-58. That's good enough to put him in the company of other Parkwood graduates with 100 wins including Danny Edwards (127) and Austin Craig (105) who wrestled for Rees.
