A Visit from the Real D.W.

On Monday, February 3, 2014 students at Union Elementary were treated to a visit from the sister of the children’s author, Marc Brown. Marc Brown is the author of the Arthur and D.W. children’s book series. All students from grades Pre-K to 5th grade listened to Kim Brown’s presentation about the process of writing a book and where Marc Brown got his inspiration for the series, in particular, the character, D. W.

Ms. Brown shared some of her family’s photos from when she and Marc were younger and told stories of their childhood. She explained that she was the inspiration for the character, D.W. and told students that they were getting to meet the “real” D.W. She also showed students what the process of writing a book looks like by showing them a picture of all the rough drafts Marc writes before settling on a final copy of his books. He also goes through this long process with his illustrations of books.

At the end of her presentation, Kim Brown showed students how to draw a picture of the character Arthur. She went step by step through the drawing process as students drew their own version of Arthur on paper that they had brought to the presentation. Afterwards, Ms. Brown stamped each child’s paper with a picture of D.W. and Marc Brown’s signature as a souvenir of her visit.
