Recently nine Parkwood Middle School students participated in the 30th Annual Shakespeare Competition at Wingate University. They joined students from Parkwood High School, CATA and Piedmont High School, as well as students from Charlotte Mecklenburg schools in performing some of Shakespeare's most well known works.
Students were required to prepare a monologue from any of Shakespeare's plays. In addition to this performance, they were required to memorize a sonnet for recitation. Parkwood Middle School Students performed monologues from plays such as, "Othello", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Twelfth Night", "Romeo and Juliet", and "As You Like It". Students performed their monologues and sonnets for judges and a small group of their peers.

Aside from the opportunity to perform, students also had a chance to explore some of Wingate University's campus. Lunch was served in the LaVerne Banquet Hall, where students were fed traditional English style food in honor of the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth. They enjoyed a type of chicken pot pie, rolls, and apples cooked in cinnamon for dessert.

The experience of preparing and performing Shakespearean monologues is something students will not soon forget. This is the third year that PWMS has participated in the competition, and there are plans to continue to participate next year. We look forward to both our students' performances and seeing what other schools have to offer.
