Paralympic Sled Hockey Team Visits Poplin Before Games; Poplin Sends a Video Message

Poplin students wish good luck to members of the Men's United States Paralympic Sled Hockey Team during a school visit.

The 2014 Men's Paralympic Ice Sledge Hockey Team recently visited Poplin Elementary School. They spent a few weeks practicing at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail before they made the trip to Sochi, Russia for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, which begins March 7, 2014.

They took a couple of hours out of their schedule to share their motivational, inspiring, and uplifting stories with our students. Each and every player had their own unique story about how they have adapted to and overcome the challenges of living with a physical disability. “I learned that even though they have disabilities, they keep on playing,” said Blake Harold a fifth grader in Kris Martino’s class.

The coach introduced the players as men who did not want pity and did not focus on their disabilities but their ABILITIES. Their presentation encouraged each of us to recognize that what matters is not what we cannot do but instead what we can do with our life. The team invited students to visit the Extreme Ice Hockey Center in Indian Trail to watch scrimmages on Friday, February 21, 2014 and Saturday, February 22, 2014.

During P.E. classes all students have been learning about and practicing the Olympic games. Highlights of the Games can be seen at: www.paralympic.org and www.teamusa.org. Live coverage will be shown on NBCSN Channel.

A few weeks after the visit, students wanted to share what they have been learning with the team. A few of the classes created a video message wishing the team good luck for the games and showed off their sled hockey skills. This video was sent by a link from the Poplin Facebook page to the team’s coach while the team is in Russia at the competition. As of Thursday, March 13, 2014, the team had beat Canada and is scheduled to play against Russia for the finals on Saturday, March 15, 2014. As the students in Miss Cosgrove’s Second Grade Class shared in the video message, “Go Team USA, bring home the gold!”
