Nuclear Engineer Visits Forest Hills
As a part of National Engineers Week, Forest Hills High Engineering Technology department hosted a speaker from Duke Energy. On February 19, 2014, Mr. Art Mironenko, a Nuclear Engineer from Duke Energy visited Forest Hills High. He made presentations to the Engineering, Drafting and Calculus classes. Among his topics were nuclear electricity generation, its benefits, and possible risks.
After a presentation of engineering careers, Mr. Mironenko discussed how power plants work, different types of clean energy, and their advantages and disadvantages. Also included was a discussion on the power plant accidents at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine and the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. He talked about the difference in plant designs in the US and lessons learned from each of these incidents. About 80 students were able to participate in this program.
