WDES cafeteria staff promotes National Nutrition Month
Good nutrition is essential to any student’s health. That means replacing junk food with more fruits, vegetables and meals prepared with nutritious ingredients. The month of March is proclaimed as “National Nutrition Month” a yearly event which calls attention to the importance of healthier eating and physical activity to control weight and prevent chronic disease.
Weddington Elementary students eat nutritious meals packed in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients they need. WDES cafeteria staff primary goals are to serve nutritious and delicious freshly prepared meals with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat milk dairy products, less sodium and fat. Good nutrition is essential to student health.
Many children consume at least half of their meals at schools. Each year, more than 31 million students receive lunch from the USDA’s National School Lunch Program. It is critical that the meals students receive from this program are as healthy and wholesome as possible.
Students can expect benefits from healthier and more nutritious food in school. Thanks to the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, major improvements are being made across the country to transform school food and to promote better nutrition and reduce obesity.
