Who is St. Patrick?
Since Monday, March 17th was St. Patrick’s Day, Mrs. Mangum’s second graders wanted to learn more about this person. Who was he? Where was he born? Why is there a day named after him?
To help us learn more about him, we used Discovery Education Streaming. We chose two videos, “Holiday Facts and Fun: St. Patrick’s Day” and “The Origin of St. Patrick’s Day” to help us learn facts about this man and this day. As the students watched the videos, they recorded many facts in their Social Studies journals.
Each student then created their own flag of Ireland. They wrote the facts that they had learned about St. Patrick, on their flags. St. Patrick is known as the man that unified the country, as well as the most important man in Ireland.
Mrs. Mangum’s class also learned that on this day, many people in Ireland celebrate this day by having others over for a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast which consists of sausage, bacon, meatballs, Irish brown bread, and other Irish treats. This is followed by traditional folk music with dancing and singing.
