Read-to-Achieve Information Session

Read-to-Achieve

Sun Valley and Shiloh Elementary schools hosted an information session on Thursday, March 20, 2014, on Read to Achieve Act as part of the Excellent Public Schools Act that affects 3rd grade students. Sun Valley Elementary Principal Dr. Terri Cooper, Shiloh Principal Scott Spencer, and Central Services member Dr. Tom Bulla from Union County Public School were in attendance.

During the beginning of the school year, each 3rd grade student was given a Beginning-of-Grade (BOG) assessment in reading to determine their reading skills. From this information, teachers planned and delivered appropriate reading instruction. At the end of the school year, all third graders will be assessed on the Reading EOG to determine their reading proficiency. Any student not demonstrating proficiency will not be promoted to the 4th grade unless they demonstrate reading proficiency through options determined by the state of North Carolina.
