2014 UCPS Elementary & Middle School Battle of the Books Competitions
On March 12th, in a closely contested battle, New Salem Elementary defeated six other elementary schools to claim the title of UCPS Elementary Battle of the Books Champion. Marvin Elementary finished a close second with a difference of only two points. In only its third year as a district sponsored event, the field of participants expanded from four to seven schools this year. New Salem will compete in the first ever Region 6 Elementary Battle on April 23rd at the UCPS Professional Development Center.
Marvin Ridge Middle claimed the middle school title on March 19th with Piedmont and Sun Valley Middle Schools tied for second place. Marvin Ridge will travel to ImaginOn in Charlotte on April 8th for the Region 6 competition. The winner will compete against 8 other middle school champions for the state title on May 1st at UNC-Greensboro.
Both local competitions were hosted by the Technology Services Department at the UCPS Professional Development Center on Brewer Drive.
Sponsored by the NC School Library Media Association since 2001, Battle of the Books was established to encourage reading by all students at the middle school level. NCSLMA added the elementary program in 2006. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the areas of children’s and young adult literature. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials and acquire a broader knowledge base.
