4th Grade Reading Unit
During the 4th grade reading unit on Social Issues, Mr. Shauan, father of a 4th grader, made a presentation on his work in Cambodia and the social issue of land grabbing. He defined land grabbing as the aggressive taking of large pieces of land in developing countries, especially by force, by domestic and transnational companies, governments, and individuals to possess the land in an unfair or illegal manner. Many of the staff had never heard of land grabbing and the profound impact it has on the people in that country.
Mr. Shauan further explained how he has helped the people of Cambodia. He explained how we all have a social responsibility to help those less fortunate.
The students had been working on defining and discussing social issues in their books. They learned that a social issue is an issue that affects a lot of people, not just one person or character. In class we discussed a variety of social issues and used the book, Maniac Magee as our mentor text to discuss homelessness, race, bullying and a variety of other issues.
Many of the students asked very good questions and took notes during the presentation.
