Colla-BO-ration between Marketing class and Bojangles highlights real-world, global lessons
Students Joellen Plyler’s class at Marvin Ridge High School got some real world experience in product development, research, marketing and advertising. The project partnered students with Bojangles' Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits to develop a new product, research the product, and create an advertising and marketing campaign.
The Project began with a presentation by Mike Bearss, Bojangles' Senior Vice President of Product Development about the process of developing a new product. Students listened to similar presentations by Bojangles' marketing managers, and purchasing officers. Each student group was assigned a mentor from Bojangles' to help guide their product development and marketing plans.
Mrs. Plyler partnered with her Instructional Technology Facilitator, Michael A. O’Hagan to teach her students how to use Google Sites and organize information for the project. Teams of students then created a Google site devoted to their new menu item and used a myriad of web 2.0 tools to make commercials, banners, fliers, and other items.
While reflecting on the project, Sophmore Brandon Kelly commented, “This is a great way to learn; you get behind the scenes information that you wouldn’t normally have.” Students enjoyed listening to the guest speaker presentations. “It’s like having direct access to specialists from each point of view,” said Kelly.
The groups will present their final products to a panel of Bojangles' executives at their corporate offices located in Charlotte on May 20. The groups will be graded on a rubric that involves research, organization, preparation, analysis of the Marketing Plan, use of available multimedia, and overall product presentation.
