Ready, Set, Read

Marvin Elementary launched it's inaugural reading program Wednesday in grand fashion.  The student body gathered together for a pep rally.  The students batted beach balls to music as they arrived, then watched some of their teachers perform a silly skit to learn all about how they could get pledges for their summer reading, record the time spent, and raise money for their school and earn prizes in recognition for their efforts.  After a power point presentation to make sure all the details were clear, the event closed with a video of staff and students reading books all over, set to the singable hit "Happy."

Marvin's school improvement team and PTO decided to create and implement the summer reading fundraiser both to raise funds for the school in the fall and to encourage reading over the summer to prevent "summer slide" and help students be ready for a strong start of the next grade.  Even incoming kindergartners are included.  One future second grader expressed her eagerness by going home and reading for an hour, even though the time won't be logged until school is out!  The program is anticipated to be a success for individual students and for the school as a whole.
