Porter Ridge Holds Ninth Poetry Slam
Porter Ridge High School held its ninth Poetry Slam competition this week, culminating in the finals held on Friday, April 25th. Twenty-one students performed their original poetry for three judges who scored the finalists based on ideas and content, conventions, poise and body language, and voice. The top three poets were: 3rd place - Corine Olarte performing her poem “5 Hours”; 2nd place - Jesse Morgan performing his poem “The Rantings of an Idealistic Realist”, and 1st place - Rachel Carroll performing her poem “Not Tired.”
The PRHS Poetry Slam has been held since 2009. In 2012, based on student requests, the Slams became a twice yearly event. Each semester students compete in their English classrooms early during Poetry Slam week. Students choose who will move forward to the semi-finals held during Wednesday. More than 20 students per block compete as semi-finalists. From those students, the top 20-25 students are chosen to advance to the finals. Rachel Carroll has now won the slam during one semester of each of her four years at Porter Ridge. The PRHS Poetry Slam is sponsored by the Porter Ridge Media Center.
