Notice of Parent, Student, and Community Meeting
Sunday, May 4, 2014 and Monday May 5, 2014
Staff from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), District of Columbia Office (Washington, D.C.) will be visiting Union County Public Schools.
The visit is part of a compliance review of whether the District provides appropriate resources to students who are English Language Learners (ELL) and to Limited English Proficient (LEP) parents/guardians. As part of this review, OCR will provide this opportunity for high school students, parents of high school students, and other members of the community to share their experiences. OCR is particularly interested in hearing your experiences with such issues as:
- Communication with ELL students and/or LEP parents/guardians;
- Support for the academic achievement and graduation of ELL students;
- Availability of resources to ELL students and LEP parents/guardians; and
- The successes and/or challenges of the District’s Alternative Language Program.
This is a listening session only. The Office for Civil rights has not received any complaints about these matters nor has it made any findings or decisions about these or other issues. We encourage you to attend this meeting and to share your views. If you have any questions, please contact Guy Johnson, OCR Attorney, at 202-453-6567 or Guy.Johnson@ed.gov or Sebastian Amar, OCR Attorney, at 202-453-6023 or Sebastian.Amar@ed.gov.
