New Town Elementary students join the fight against cancer

Students from New Town Elementary showcase their talent in the school's first talent show, held to raise money for Relay for Life.

This year, New Town Elementary students have been working to help fight Cancer.

Throughout the year they have made donations that will go to the American Cancer Society’s largest event, Relay for Life.

At Relay for Life, communities come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too many loved ones.

Funds raised at Relay help to fund cancer research and many other programs offered by the American Cancer Society.

Recently, New Town Elementary students participated in three main events to raise funds for Relay for Life.

The first event was called Rainbow for Relay. Students had the opportunity to purchase a colored shamrock and write the name of a loved one that is battling or has battled cancer. These shamrocks were displayed in the school’s main hall as a colorful reminder of all the loved ones that have faced cancer.

Students and families also had the opportunity to participate in a community yard sale. While doing a little early Spring-cleaning, families were encouraged to donate unwanted items to a school yard sale.

Volunteers worked diligently to organize the inventory. Community members came out to the school on Saturday, March 22, 2014 to see what treasures could be found. All proceeds from the yard sale were donated to Relay for Life.

The final way that students have fought back against cancer is by participating in the school’s first ever talent show!

Proceeds from this event were donated to Relay for Life. Numerous students tried out to share their talents at the “Let Your Light Shine” talent show.

Participants performed their talent in front of a packed house on April 4th. Acts ranged from singing, to martial arts, to playing the piano, and even performing with the hula hoop!

Each act confirmed what many parents and students already knew about New Town Elementary – the school has a great group of talented kids!

At the end of the night, several acts were recognized for their talents.

Congratulations to the following students for earning their awards:
· Most Original - Daisy M. performed with the Hula Hoop
· Shining Bright- Mika and Taylor M. performed a duet
· Terrific Talent- Christina L. performed with the violin
· Show Stopper- Evan L. performed a comedy routine
· Most Dramatic- Daphne S. and Amber T. performed a musical theater act
· Best Duo or Group- Alicia G., Abigail S., Samantha C., Lily T., and Heather D. performed a dance number

Each event that was held to raise funds for Relay for Life was completed with compassion and enthusiasm from New Town’s staff and students, who said it has been inspirational to watch the New Town community rally around this worthy cause and take action to help fight back against cancer.

New Town families were also invited to attend this year’s main Relay for Life event held May 2nd and May 3rd at Sun Valley High School.
