Tree Planting Activity with the Town of Indian Trail

Fourth grade students plant Red Maple trees with help from the Town of Indian Trail, N.C.

On Earth Day, April 22, students in fourth grade participated in a tree planting activity with members from the Town of Indian Trail, including Mayor Michael Alvarez. First, the Indian Trail Town staff presented facts and information about trees in North Carolina to the students. Then everyone planted Red Maple trees near the playground.

All fourth grade students were sent home with a Long-Leaf Pine tree to plant at their home. Students were encouraged to plant their tree through a contest. To enter the contest students had to send in pictures of their planted tree back to the their teacher. So far Mrs. Durant and Mrs. Kite’s fourth grade classes are tied with 17 students each who have planted their tree at home and showed proof to their teacher. The class with the most participation will win a pizza party sponsored by the Town of Indian Trail!

Fourth grade students also participated in a poetry contest about Arbor Day with the Town of Indian Trail. The winners of the poetry contest were:

From Mrs. Whited’s Class: First Place- Megan Walker, Second Place- Cora McMullen, and Third Place- Nicholas Jones.

From Ms. Martin’s Class: First Place- Emily Carpenter, Second Place- Sallie Garner, and Third Place- Alyssa Rutland.

The winners from the poetry contest were invited to a special presentation in their honor on Saturday, April 26, 2014 where each was recognized with certificates and prize awards.
