Career Week at UCEC

Student Tai Huynh poses with Mr. Oscar Gonzales and Ms. Gwen Thomas, Career Week speakers for Union County Early College.

During the week of March 24-27, Union County Early College students attended hour-long, daily assemblies to learn about various high demand careers and college opportunities. On Monday, the students heard from Mr. Lee Gaston, Admissions Counselor, from Pfeiffer University and Mrs. Amanda Dworsky, Regional Recruiter for Western North Carolina, from the University of Alabama. The speakers informed the students about the colleges they represent, as well as general college information on admissions, student life, and activities. On Tuesday, four medical representatives spoke about their respective fields: Mrs. Joyce Long, Dean of South Piedmont Nursing program; Dr. Katie Wolfe, veterinarian from Indian Trail Animal Hospital; Mr. Phillip Tarte, Director of the Union County Public Health Department; and Lindsey Bell, the daughter of our own Mrs. Bell, who is a nurse at Carolina Medical Center in Pineville. On Wednesday, Mr. Oscar Gonzalez, Instructor of Computer Information Technology from South Piedmont Community College, spoke about computers and the technology field, and Mrs. Gwen Thomas spoke about banking, business, and entrepreneurship. On Thursday, Jim Bell, from Advantage Sales and Marketing spoke about business, specifically sales and marketing; and Mr. Dustin Robertson, Art Instructor, from SPCC discussed careers in Art. This Career Fair allowed students to hear about careers, education requirements, and different paths that could be taken. There was a Q & A session afterwards, with some guests giving away prizes. Many students learned about fields previously not considered. UCEC would like to thank all the participants who helped make our first Career Fair possible
