Health Careers Field Trips
How are students who are interested in pursuing a health career taking action in order to achieve their goals? The students in Medical Science II from Monroe High School have recently taken various field trips, in order to obtain more knowledge and experiences that deal with healthcare careers.
Their first trip was on Friday March 21, 2014; when they attended South Piedmont Community College for their health science career fair. The field trip was from 9:00 a.m.-12:00p.m. The hosts divided them up into various groups and assigned the students to observe several different classes. Within the classes were the teachers of those classes; who spoke out to them about a little of what to expect in those classes and what their part in the medical field is about. A few of those classes were Associate Degree Nursing (RN), Practical Nursing (LPN), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Sonography, and Medical Assisting/Medical Laboratory Assistant.
The next field trip the kids took was to Queens University. The field trip was held on April 10, 2014, it lasted from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The students had the opportunity to tour around the campus and check out the schools medical programs. They later encountered the school's admission counselor and got to discuss the school in general and its benefits. The counselor covered many of the areas in which the students were feeling doubtful about. Once they finished the counselor answered a few questions that the students had and then finally they were on their way home.
After their field trip to Queens University, the students went to Wingate University School of Pharmacy. The trip took place on April 23, 2014 and it lasted from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30.m. During their visit to Wingate; the students had the opportunity to do hands-on labs, in which they made their own prescription. The prescription included the dose of an active ingredient mixed with lactose, which was then placed inside capsule. The Wingate University trip allowed the students to get a sense of a healthcare career within the college life.
The final field trip was to CMC Union. CMC is Monroe’s nearest hospital; it is right down the street from the high school. The students received an overview of various medical fields within the hospital. A couple of those fields dealt with radiology and even a simulation lab. The students were able to obtain a greater understanding of how it is to work inside a hospital.
The Medical Science II students were able to accomplish four field trips within their course. Those field trips included South Piedmont Community College, Queens University, Wingate University, and Carolinas Medical Center Union. These field trips helped all of the students to achieve a greater understanding of not only what their goals should be, but what it is like to be a healthcare profession.
